How to change the owner of a Google Calendar?

Published

Transfer control of a calendar or individual event to another person. Useful when handing off a project, ending a business relationship, or onboarding a new team member to manage a calendar.

Important distinction:

In Google Calendar, you can’t truly “transfer ownership.” You remain the original owner. But you can grant someone else full admin control (“Make changes and manage sharing” permission) so they can manage everything as if they own it.

Give full control of an entire calendar:

  1. Open your Google calendar.
  2. In the left sidebar under My Calendars, hover over the calendar.
  3. Click the three dots menu.
  4. Select Settings and Sharing.
  5. Scroll to Share with specific people.
  6. Click Add people.
  7. Enter the email of the person to give full control to.
  8. In the Permissions dropdown, select Make changes and manage sharing.

That person can now:

  • Add, edit, and delete events
  • Change calendar color and name
  • Invite others and manage permissions
  • Share with additional people

It’s full administrative control without technically transferring ownership.

Transfer ownership of a single event:

  1. Open the event in Google Calendar.
  2. Click edit (pencil icon).
  3. Click the three dots in the event details.
  4. Select Change Owner (if available on the event).

  1. Enter the new owner’s email.
  2. Click Change Owner.

The new owner becomes the event creator and has full control. You lose editing rights unless the new owner re-shares it with you.

When to use each:

  • Full calendar admin: For ongoing collaboration (handing off a project calendar to a team member)
  • Single event ownership: For specific events where someone else should be in charge

For solo consultants:

If bringing on an assistant to manage your calendar:

  • Give them Make changes and manage sharing permission (not full transfer)
  • This keeps your name as the owner while letting them add/edit events
  • If they leave, you keep full control

Frequently asked questions about How to change the owner of a Google Calendar?

Can I permanently transfer ownership of a calendar to someone else?
No. You always remain the original owner. You can grant them full admin control (Make changes and manage sharing), which gives them almost all ownership rights, but you stay the technical owner.
If I give someone full calendar control and they delete the calendar, can I recover it?
Yes. As the original owner, you can restore deleted calendars from the trash or contact Google Support. Full calendar access doesn’t grant deletion authority over the original owner.
Can I change who owns a single event after the meeting is created?
Yes. Open the event, click the three dots, and select Change Owner if available. The new owner becomes the event creator.
Can I take back full calendar control after giving it to someone?
Yes. Go to Settings and Sharing, find their name under Share with specific people, and click the trash icon to revoke access.
If I give an assistant full calendar control, can they delete my events without asking?
Yes. Full control (Make changes and manage sharing) allows them to add, edit, and delete any event. Use read-only or edit-only permissions if you want to restrict deletion.
