How to add a Google calendar background?
Google Calendar removed background image support years ago. However, you don’t need it. Calendar color-coding is far more practical for managing multiple calendars at a glance.
Instead of backgrounds, use calendar colors:
Every calendar in Google Calendar can have its own distinct color. Color-coding is actually more functional than a background image because the color shows up in:
- Calendar list (left sidebar)
- Event blocks on your calendar
- When sharing calendars with others
- Mobile apps
This makes it instantly obvious which calendar an event belongs to, especially useful when juggling client projects.
How to change a calendar’s color:
In the left sidebar under My Calendars, hover over the calendar name.
Click the three dots menu.
Select Edit calendar color.
Choose from the available color palette (15+ colors to choose from).
How to choose calendar colors:
The goal is to scan your calendar in seconds and know what you’re looking at. Use colors with intention:
- Red or orange for billable client work - These warm colors draw your eye. When you glance at your calendar, you immediately see paid work. Good for tracking utilization.
- Blue or green for internal work - Use cool colors for your own admin tasks, follow-ups, or focus blocks. Cool colors recede visually, so they don’t compete for attention with client work.
- Gray for shared or team calendars - Use neutral colors for calendars you don’t own (team calendars, executive schedules you’re tracking). Gray signals “this isn’t my calendar.”
- Purple or distinct color for personal time - Make personal blocks, vacation, or family time a distinct color so you see immediately when you’re overbooked.
- Group related projects with color families - If you have three clients (Acme, Zenith, Global), use shades of blue for all three. This visually connects related calendars while keeping them distinct.
When you look at your calendar view, you should recognize your workload instantly. A full screen of red means you’re booked solid on client work. A screen with mixed colors means you have balance. This only works if colors have consistent meaning across all your calendars.
